Sandblasting, or abrasive blasting, is a surface treatment technique that uses compressed air or liquid to propel abrasive materials (media) at high speeds against a surface. It is primarily used to clean, remove rust, paint, or contaminants in preparation for coatings, or surfaces can be left untreated for a chic ‘sandblasted’ look. Walnut shell is the premier “soft” abrasive media used for sandblasting because it effectively cleans and strips surfaces without damaging underlying materials. Its low Mohs hardness (approx. 3.5), angular shape, and durability allow for gentle cleaning, polishing, and paint removal on delicate surfaces like automotive parts, wood, plastics, and aluminum. Marble is the most expensive option due to its high demand as a luxury material, coupled with limited supply, distant quarrying locations and transportation costs. Its popularity for high-end aesthetics, unique veining, and natural heat resistance makes it a premium, “one-of-a-kind” product that adds significant value to homes. 3D scanning or mapping your kitchen is an effective way to obtain precise measurements for new countertops, often achieving 99-100% accuracy. Calcium Chloride – To make concrete set in freezing weather, contractors primarily add accelerating admixtures, and the most common is calcium chloride. This chemical speeds up the cement hydration process to gain strength faster. Other methods include using hot water, heated aggregates, non-chloride accelerators for reinforced steel, and special antifreeze agents to lower the freezing point of the mixing water. Volute is the correct answer. A volute is a spiral, scroll-shaped ornament or formation, most commonly recognized as the distinctive decorative scroll on the capital of Ionic, Corinthian, and Composite columns in classical architecture. Derived from the Latin voluta (“scroll”), it generally refers to any spiral, coiled, or whorled shape found in nature, art, or engineering, and that includes handrails on stairways. You can see the Eastview Homes team at work handcrafting an exceptional staircase on the Eastview Homes blog, and in another entry you can read about finishing carpentry and final touches which includes a segment detailing volutes on handrails. Stone walls are the most visually impressive, longest lasting, and most expensive exterior finish. For wall siding, Durable, low-maintenance options include brick, fiber-cement, and metal. Select colors can complement the architectural style and coordinate with fixed elements like roofs or stone. Vinyl is the least expensive and is generally sold with flat / matte finishes which hide imperfections, or satin or semi-gloss which is easier to wash clean. A lintel is a horizontal structural beam spanning across the top of openings like doors, windows, or fireplaces to support the load of the wall above. Made of steel, concrete, wood, or stone, they ensure structural integrity by transferring weight to the adjacent walls. Gantt Chart is the right answer. Designed and popularized by Henry Gantt c. 1910–1915, a famous American mechanical engineer and management consultant, a modern Gantt chart is a type of bar chart used to illustrate a project’s schedule. Eastview Homes’ Gantt chart lists the tasks to be performed on the vertical axis, and time intervals on the horizontal axis. The width of the horizontal bars in the graph shows the duration of each activity. Our Gantt charts illustrate the start and finish dates of the terminal elements and summary elements of a project which keeps everyone on schedule. Replacing windows generally does not require a permit if they are “like-for-like” replacements, meaning the new window is the same size, shape, and location as the old one, with no structural alterations. Permits are only required if you are changing the size, cutting new openings, or altering load-bearing walls. In the Town of Oakville, a building permit is required for any construction that involves structural changes, new additions, or alterations to plumbing and electrical systems. In many jurisdictions, such as Oakville and Burlington, this includes building new houses, additions, detached garages over 10m² (108 sq ft), and extensive renovations. An astragal is a vertical molding or metal strip attached to one of a pair of doors (or sometimes a single door) that covers the gap where the doors meet, sealing it against weather, light, and smoke while providing security. It acts as a stop for the other door and is essential for security to prevent tampering or prying. This design design maximizes interior attic space (a “garret”), allowing for additional, comfortable living space. A mansard roof (or French roof) is a four-sided, multi-sided roof characterized by two distinct slopes on each side, where the lower slope is much steeper—almost vertical—than the upper one. Popularized by 17th-century French architect Francois Mansart, this design maximizes interior attic space (a “garret”), allowing for additional, comfortable living space. Read about Eastview Homes’ roofing endeavours, how we repaired a barrel roof on our blog, and there’s more talk about roofing on Eastview Homes’ exterior renovation page. Although we’re intrigued by their beauty, Eastview Homes avoids Mansard roofs primarily because of their high construction costs, poor water drainage, and high maintenance needs. The design’s complex, dual-pitched structure often features a nearly flat top which makes it prone to leaks, snow accumulation, and expensive repairs. A general contractor is your best choice for pre-construction consulting with regards to prices, getting permits and overcoming zoning issues. Homeowners are well advised to consult with a knowledgeable and reputable home renovations construction manager. Successful renovation projects begin by defining goals, establishing a realistic budget, and finding the right professionals. A general contractor has the knowledge to advise what is feasible according to the homeowners’ needs and budget. They also work tirelessly throughout the project to schedule deliveries, sub-trades and to see the project through to completion. Homeowners can read about Keith Travers our construction manager and contact him through our About page. Slate shingles are the most durable, lowest maintenance and longest lasting roof solution. Choosing the right roof is a process which requires evaluating how well a material can handle local weather, such as snow loads, or high heat, while ensuring it compliments the building’s aesthetic and matches other roofs in the neighbourhood.

Why play our home renovation trivia game?
Answer: It’s fun and filled with good facts. Our trivia game is entertaining, but could also be viewed as a strategic tool to help homeowners make more informed decisions about upcoming projects. Renovation can feel overwhelming, especially for first-time homeowners who don’t know where to start. A good trivia game breaks down complex topics like materials, timelines, costs, and design principles into digestible, engaging pieces of information. Instead of passively reading long articles, users actively participate in learning, which improves retention and builds practical knowledge they can actually use.
Trivia reduces the intimidation factor that surrounds renovation planning. By presenting information in a low-pressure, game-like format, our challenge invites users to explore topics they might otherwise avoid, such as budgeting realities or structural considerations. This creates a sense of progress and confidence. When users get answers right, they feel validated; when they don’t, they learn something new without feeling discouraged. That emotional engagement keeps them on the site longer and deepens their connection to the brand.
From a decision-making perspective, trivia games can subtly guide users toward making smarter choices. The questions we have selected highlight common renovation mistakes, introduce best practices, or showcase modern solutions you may not have considered. For example, a question about insulation efficiency or kitchen layout ergonomics can plant ideas that inform future purchasing or design decisions. We hope users will see our website as a trusted educational resource, and not just a brochure from a service provider.

How did we go about choosing these challenging home renovation trivia questions?
We rate our trivia questions by participants’ reactions and we used their feedback to refine three dozen ideas into the high quality quiz you can play above.
What makes a good home renovation trivia question? A strong challenge is clearly expressed and appeals to a builder’s imagination while at the same time being ‘common knowledge’.

The best questions are short and don’t need qualifiers or much explaining. At the same time, they excite a builder’s creativity and touch on topics they themselves have thought about themselves or know something about. When a player starts gasping, scratching their head or fist-pumping the air, saying “oh, oh, oh,” as their brain searches for a scrap of information, then we know it’s a good question.

The final metric we check is scoring. Useful signals include the Correct-Answer Rate which is expressed as a percentage and is supplied for each question / answer and all this comes standard with the HDQuiz app.
If 90–100% answer a specific question correctly, then it’s probably too easy; if under ~20% get it right, it’s likely too hard or poorly expressed. We aim for a middle band (say 40–80%) for your core questions, with a few easy ones and a few “stumpers” for flavor.
